Quick Navigation

Tykes U5 (born 2014)

Our program introduces the players to structured soccer activity. The KLM Staff coaches will lead the group in a skills training portion at the beginning of every session and from there the focus will shift to small sided games for the balance of the session each week. The objective is to ensure that through small sided games (3v3) the kids have unlimited opportunities to touch the ball and have the most fun.
Volunteer Parent Supervisors under the close direction of our KLM Staff coaches are responsible for working with groups of 3-4 players at a time. The Volunteer Parent Supervisors main task is to supervise small sided games (3v3). Previous coaching experience is not required. The groups are informal and are continuously balanced throughout the program to ensure the players enjoy the best experience with the exception being, volunteer parent supervisors, will always work with the group their child belongs to. Players are divided into groups based on age and/or skill level but we will always rebalance groups when necessary.

The sessions take place for one hour every Saturday on the fields at Hillcrest Dinmont Fields. The program starts in the middle of September and runs until the following March. There is usually a three to four week break in December (over the Christmas holidays).
Players must provide their own shin guards, soccer socks and soccer cleats. They may wear pants or shorts. KLM will supply a free t-shirt for each registrant. Once registered, you will be contacted in late August to be advised of the start date of the program.
Please see the How to Register section on how to register your child and the costs of this program.

NOTE: parents MUST step up to coach and manage the team in our U6 program in order for kids to have the best experience. Please contact the Head Administrator ( headadministrator@klmsoccer.com) if you are interested in coaching or managing in our U6 program. Fields and times may be adjusted due to enrollment levels, field conditions or other factors.

Field Closures

The Vancouver Parks Board reserves the right to close Hillcrest Fields in the event of heavy rain that results in the saturation of the field or the fields having standing water or large muddy areas. In addition if the fields are frozen, have snow or heavy frost on them, the Vancouver Parks Board at their discretion may close the fields until such time the surface conditions have thawed and drained. The Parks Board notifies the local soccer clubs of field closures on Friday afternoons and in turn the club will notify all Tykes families by 7pm on Friday. If the Park board determines that Hillcrest field is not playable, then the club has an alternate gravel field located just a few blocks away at Wolfe Elementary School. The email that is sent to families notifying them of field closures will indicate if the program will be moved to the alternate field or if the alternate field is closed as well. We will also be updating this information on the KLM Facebook and Twitter Social Media platforms.

Tykes U6 (born 2013)

This program is designed to introduce youngsters to the fundamentals of soccer. If you have a child aged five years old, this is the place for them. The program is designed for fun, fitness, sportsmanship and the teaching of basic soccer skills, with the emphasis on non-competitive practice and play. The sessions take place for one hour every Saturday on the fields at Hillcrest Dinmont Fields. The added bonus with the U6 program is that players have the option of arriving 30 minutes early and receive additional skills coaching by our staff coaches.

At this stage is where we welcome and introduce the Volunteer Parent Coaches to the mix. Players are divided into small teams and assigned a parent coach. The club will continue to offer training for parents who want to continue coaching with the club beyond this age group.

To be a parent coach in this program you do not need to have any previous experience as the club will offer a parent coach training session each Saturday with our staff coaches 30 minutes prior to the start time. This will allow for our volunteer parent coaches to familiarize themselves with the lesson plan for that morning.

Tykes U7 (born 2012)

The U7 program is designed to introduce youngsters to the fundamentals of team play and prepare them for playing in league competition against other clubs the following season. If you have a child aged six years old, this is the place for them. The program is designed for fun, fitness, sportsmanship and the teaching of soccer skills, the basics of team play with the emphasis on non-competitive practice and play.

The sessions take place for one hour on Saturday mornings on the fields at Hillcrest Dinmont Field. This program offers an OPTIONAL second practice on Wednesday evenings in October at David Livingstone Elementary Gravel Field, which we recommend all players attend. Players are divided into small teams and have a parent volunteer coach lead the training under the direction and guidance of the KLM Staff coaches on both days. The Saturday mornings are generally reserved for small sided games and Wednesday evenings are instructional focused sessions.
